As mentioned in my previous post, I'm trying different ways to get back into my blogging. One way I'm trying is to post on my tumblr. I think it'll feel less pressured and I'll be able to post short, more image oriented posts without overthinking it. After a while, I'll probably transfer my domain over there, but in the meantime please visit me over there: www.kellymeows.tumblr.com!

In the last month I took an unintentional hiatus from my blog. I've been blogging pretty steadily for almost 2 years. Through 3 apartments, 4 jobs, 2 careers, 1 elopement, and other life changes. In the meantime, my style and sense of self have definitely developed in different and some not-so-different ways. Blogging and outfits photos have been a constant through all of this.

I've also become somewhat frustrated with my blog, to be perfectly honest. In the last month I've reflected on how I can take these frustrations and grow from them. I need to be more proactive in my posting, sharing, and participating in the blogger forums. I'm considering switching platforms to WordPress, which is more expensive due to hosting fees but much safer and more customizable. Or tumblr for the community. I've realized that I do enjoy writing and the creative outlet it provides for me, even though working in Marketing allows me to do that every day. These are a few of my resolutions for my blog in 2016.

Beauty Buy: Revlon All In One Mascara Review

Friday, December 4, 2015

I'm never one to turn down trying out yet another mascara in the hopes that this one will be the best. Revlon recently announced that it was replacing all of its mascaras with a line of five mascaras that keep it simple- Dramatic Definition, Ultra Volume, Super Length, Volume + Length Magnified, and Ultimate All-In-One. As of right now, it seems that only the Ultimate All-In-One is available for purchase in my area.

The mascara features a super small mascara wand. It's hollow to help distribute formula and has little plastic teeth to grab each lash. The size of the brush was a big challenge for me to apply the formula evenly. I really struggled to create a uniform look. I also found the formula to be pretty thick and the size of the teeth on the brush did not help distribute it properly. In the end, I did kind of like the effect, but it was way too difficult and time consuming to achieve in daily life. See my application photos below.

No mascara
Only on my right eye, for comparison.
Mascara fully applied on both eyes.
Side view to show definition.
Honestly, in the end, I was really unimpressed with this mascara. It can be a nice mascara, if you have the time to slowly build up the product and then comb through to take out the clumps, but that takes way too much time on an average morning. That said, I think I'll be holding out hope that the Volume + Length Magnified or Dramatic Definition works for me. All mascaras in this line are reported to be available in January 2016.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to feature these sneakers in a blog post without a punny title, and I don't know if I'll ever want to. For a day of braving the stores the weekend after Black Friday, when there are still some good residual sales to be had, I knew I'd want to focus on comfort and practicality.

Book Review: The Grown Up

Sunday, November 29, 2015

It's safe to say that Gillian Flynn is one of my favorite authors. After the fantastic thriller that is Gone Girl, I quickly read through her other two novels- Sharp Objects and Dark Places- and they were all amazing. So when I found out that there was another Flynn story coming out, even if it was a short story, I couldn't wait to read it!

Unfortunately, The Grownup has to be my least favorite story by Flynn. It's still an interesting and great read that's leagues ahead of so many other stories I've read. Even considering the limitations of a short story, it can be a really fantastic way to get a glimpse into a different world and some very interesting characters. It was a favorite class of mine during undergrad and I've shared many reviews of collections of short stories here. While this short story has all of Flynn's twists and turns, brilliant descriptions, and interesting characters, it felt cut off at the end. Not by much, but enough that it left me unsatisfied instead of wanting more.

That said, if you're as big a fan of Flynn as I am, definitely pick up this short story to tide you over until the next novel that is hopefully coming soon!

For Thanksgiving this past week, I knew I wanted an outfit that was polished, comfortable, and classic (of course). I purchased these pants from Old Navy a few months ago and they're my fave when I need a workday to be comfortable. With a literal elastic waist, they were a perfect choice for Thanksgiving. I finished it off with a light black 3/4 sleeve sweater and pointy loafers.

Breaking Out the Blanket Scarf

Wednesday, November 25, 2015

The weather is finally starting to match the season, which means that it's officially freezing. For temps that go below 32 degrees, I know it's time for my plaid blanket scarf. This time I paired it with a black and white stripe tee, warm grey cardigan, and black khaki pants (for work).

Book Review: Everything I Never Told You

Saturday, November 21, 2015

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng is a powerful novel that closely studies a mid-western family in the 1970's buried in their own secrets- feelings, dreams, and shame. It's an immersion in a family's complexities and challenges before and after the eldest daughter is found dead in the neighborhood lake.

Celeste Ng flawlessly weaves together each family member's point of view throughout the chapters and novel so you feel like you're getting a true, multi-faceted look at this family. The father, James, is struggling with his own sense of place and identity as the only Asian man in town. Marilyn, the mother, always had a strong will and dream to become a doctor despite her homemaker mother's best intentions. When these dreams aren't realized, they're passed onto her daughter, Lydia, who feels the ever-present weight of her parent's wishes, smothering her own desires. Nath, the older brother, is Lydia's silent support, but he has his own dreams to get out of their small town and study the galaxies. Hannah, the youngest, is largely neglected as all the focus is on Lydia, but she sees everything and is incredibly sensitive to the family's dynamics.

All these characters come together in a family with many pulls and desires in all different directions. This is an incredible novel that I highly recommend.

Husband Jeans

Monday, November 16, 2015

Now that I'm married boyfriend jeans become husband jeans, right? These are actually an old pair of my husband's that (somehow) fit me perfectly. For your reference, he's 6' 3" and I'm 5' 7"- it's a moment straight out of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Anyway, these are the perfect jeans to throw on with a striped tee and slip on sneakers. I'm not usually a fan of the boyfriend jeans "look" on me, but these are perfection.
